MYTH:
All fat should be removed from the diet.
FACT:
Fat is an essential nutrient for good health and the American Heart Association states that fats should comprise around 30% of the total calorie intake for the day. Fat plays several important roles in the body:
• It maintains proper core temperature
• Protects vital organs
• Constitutes cell membranes
• Produces hormone like effects
• It is a dense energy sources that helps you feel satiated for hours
• Vital for absorption of other essential nutrients
Trick is to monitor the type and amount of fat in the diet — unsaturated fatty acids from nuts, seeds, canola and olive oil are important to keep, while decreasing or eliminating saturated fats from animal and trans fat from artificial sources.
MYTH:
Exercising first thing in the morning increases all day energy expenditure and metabolism more than a workout later in the day.
FACT:
The number of calories expended during a workout depends on the intensity and duration of the workout, regardless of whether it is in the morning, afternoon or evening.
